HOUSTON, June 17, 2019 – A new International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC) GF-6 motor oil standard will go into effect on May 1, 2020.
Auto manufacturers are continually striving to achieve efficiency and fuel economy, without sacrificing performance or power. As a result of this demand, there is an increasing strain on powertrains to operate in severe environments. Now, motor oils must also do their part in keeping up with the performance demand of modern engines.
GF-6 motor oils will help protect against timing chain wear and Low Speed Pre-Ignition (LSPI), a premature GDI (gasoline direct injection) engine combustion event where the fuel-air mixture ignites before intended, causing high pressures inside the engine’s cylinders, and ultimately, engine damage.
GF-6 motor oil will be offered in two options to best suit different generations of engine technology:
- GF-6A will be backward compatible and carry the API “Starburst” Certification Mark. The applicable ILSAC viscosity grades are SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30, and 10W-30.
- GF-6B will not be backward compatible due to the fact that most existing engines were not designed to run on such low viscosity grade oil. As a result, GF-6B oils will carry a different, new Certification Mark to help differentiate them. GF-6B motor oils will be for SAE 0W-16 only.
Chevron announced they will begin introducing Havoline and Supreme GF-6 and SP motor oils by the first license date, which is May 1, 2020.
